Black and White by Goodnightmoon

Link: Black and White
Summary: Everything was black and white for Angie Calivari." A student teacher, who came back to the small town he once hated falls in love with a girl he knows he can't have.

My review: It has potential. This short story (though it may be too short to call it that). Perhaps I'll call it a 'glimpse' is about a student teacher who is infatuated with one of his students. The reader is shown his thoughts about this girl named Angie who is dorky looking. Although she's not gorgeous per se, he likes her.

I liked the direction this story was going in, but it ended too soon to be memorable. The author could have continued with this teacher's tale, let us watch him and Angie bond rather than summing up their relationship by saying 'they grew up together.' That's nice, but I want to watch them interact and discover for myself why this guy likes this chick so much. This tale fell flat because there was no depth. We were asked to just assume that Angie, this girl who doesn't seem at all interesting, just happened to capture this man's heart. I understand that this was supposed to be a short story, but there's no story. Not really. The author could have done more with this story.

Aside from the plot, or lack there of, the tense shifts within the story were distracting. Some parts were in past while other parts were in present tense. The description used was good though. The author did a great job describing the main character's surroundings. She/he is really good with the tiny details when it comes to setting.

I'd give this story a 3/5 points.

Intro

Hello people!

This blog will be my place to review young adult stories that I read on fictionpress, and hopefully other sites once I discover them. I've been thinking about writing young adult fiction for a while now. The thing is...I don't read much young adult fiction. I'm more of a romance novel, adult fiction reader. O_o. Yeah...

Anyway, I'm not overtly harsh when it comes to reviews. I know I hate receiving bad reviews so I won't put others through that. However, I will tell the truth in a nice way...hopefully.

Well, lets get started.
